Dish Network Corp. reported a third quarter profit that beat expectations after signing up more customers away from cable companies. The second largest U.S. satellite television provider had a net income of $315 million or 68 cents per share compared to a loss of $158 million or 35 cents at the same time last year. Analysts were expecting a profit of 43 cents per share. Sales went up 2.3% to $3.6 billion compared to predictions of $3.59 billion. The company added 35,000 pay subscribers during the quarter. Dish's rival DirecTV added 139,000 subscribers as the two companies benefit from an exodus of customers leaving cable for cheaper deals and packages with satellite companies.
